Your currently tracked quest appears on the screen, but there are no arrows or visual indicators of where to go next. The journal tracks all of the quests you are currently able to work on, and the sub-sections of each of these questlines, and provides very clear guidance on each step. The placement of portals usually makes the distance you need to travel fairly short, especially if you open the portals to new areas as soon as you are able. You able to return to that spot to retrieve your dropped items.
